Why I Don’t Tattoo at Weddings or Other Offsite Events

A Tattoo Artist’s Open Letter:

To Whom It May Concern,

I truly appreciate your interest in my work and the thought of including my tattooing at your special event. However, I don’t tattoo wedding related tattoos on couples like names or dates, and I don’t tattoo at weddings, engagements, or other offsite events

Legally, setting up at any event requires proper permits. In Suffolk County, tattooing outside of a licensed studio is possible but comes with regulations. The county requires an approved permit application, a site plan drawn to scale, and a designated space of at least 45 square feet that is physically separated from the public. The space must also have accessible bathrooms, hand sinks, sharps containers, covered waste receptacles, and privacy screens.

Beyond the legalities, my approach to tattooing is deeply personal. As a tattoo artist and designer, I focus on self expression tattoos— ones that go with your unique story and compel strong emotions.

The atmosphere of a wedding or large event, that could potentially add alcohol and other substances, and flash-style tattoos, gives a different vibe from the experience I aim to create. Even if I were to design custom tattoos at an event, the lack of my studio’s setup and comfort would be a major limitation.

The one-on-one sessions I have in my studio, free from distractions, allow for deep discussions, mirror work, and an intimate process that ensures my clients walk away with something truly meaningful. That experience is at the heart of what I do, and I don’t feel I can fully provide it outside of my space.

I’m honored that you thought of me for this, and I really appreciate your interest in my fine line, precise, and thoughtful tattooing.

At this time, it’s not something that aligns with my process to give my clients a true tattoo from me. Thank you for understanding and I do invite you to experience a tattoo session at Fine Line Willy!

I have created small group events for the right project at my studio with multiple people getting tattooed and I’m always happy to hear about creative and meaningful projects.

Thank you!

Adam
